Poverty is stubborn. It passes from parent to child, generation after generation, unless something breaks the cycle. At the Akan Ime Foundation, we believe education is that something.
Here are five reasons we continue to invest deeply in education programs across Nigeria:
1. Education unlocks economic opportunity. Educated individuals earn more, contribute more to their communities, and are better equipped to navigate an increasingly complex world.
2. Education builds critical thinking. Communities with access to quality education are more resistant to misinformation, exploitation, and poor health decisions.
3. Education empowers women and girls. Educated women marry later, have healthier families, and are more likely to educate their own children — creating a virtuous cycle of progress.
4. Education reduces child labour. When school is accessible and affordable, children are in classrooms, not fields or factories.
5. Education drives civic participation. Literate citizens engage more meaningfully in democratic processes, hold leaders accountable, and build stronger institutions.
